Project: Hyde Park Burger King (P-002-HPBK)

Project Summary

Northeast foods (dba Burger King) and Finard Properties opened a Burger King across the street from Boston Preparatory Charter. Surrounding neighborhood organizations and Boston Preparatory Charter School are opposed to the operation of this Fast Food restaurant because they believe that the Burger King directly harms the health and well being of the students of color who predominantly attend the school.

Apart from the health concerns cited by Dr. Sara Bleich, a professor of public health policy at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health in this Boston.com article on this Burger King. The operator of this Burger King One of the country’s biggest restaurant franchisees has agreed to pay $250,000 to settle 843 child labor violations at Burger King restaurants across Massachusetts, including “ an instance in which a minor worked until nearly 5 a.m.” - Attorney General Maura Healey. Northeast Foods was cited for allowing 16- and 17-year-old employees to work too many hours in a day, too late at night, and without proper work permits at nearly 30 of its 43 locations in the state.

Our research has been pivotal in supporting the local neighborhood organizations that are battling in court with little or no resources these multi million dollar corporations and even the City of Boston.

Theory of change

With study, research and development of this project communities can be empowered to achieve social justice for them selves against all odds. The legacy of ‘Redlining’ and the subsequent ‘Redline Sprawl’ we are investigating is critical to working to identify, study and recommend solutions to the systemic drivers allowing children of color to be targeted by fast food chains.

Project goal

To provide the study, research and development to facilitate a culturally rejuvenating land use in communities of color in Boston, MA. In this case, proximity of unhealthy food and marketing to the school directly harms the health and well being of the students of Boston Preparatory Charter School and should be rectified.
